The TARI Project
Technology Assisted Reading Intervention
Nicholls State University College of Education
What is the TARI Project?
Beginning in the Fall of 2014 Nicholls students enrolled in EDUC 402 and 403 will receive iPads to use when tutoring K-5 students in the area of reading.
Candidates in both courses will each be assigned a K-5 student to work with throughout the semester. Candidates will tutor these students and help them to develop reading skills. Nicholls candidates will use their provided iPads to provide the K-12 students with technology enriched reading activities. Students will develop skills in the areas of phonics and phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing.
At the end of the semester candidates will create and ebook about their experience. Each ebook will include information about specific apps that will include the price, area of concentration the app relates to, an explanation of the app, how the app was used with their student, and a critique of the app.
The TARI candidate handbook serves as a guide for the project. The ebook contains user agreements and procedures to be followed. It also includes instructions for project requirements and information about some of the apps installed on the iPad.
- In EDUC 402 candidates will learn how to develop the reading abilities of elementary students and will participate in field experiences where they can practice the skills they learn.
- In EDUC 403 candidates will learn how to analyze and correct reading disabilities among students and also participate in related field experiences.
